Abandoning the Key Signature: A Musical (R)Evolution by Dr. Abigail Richardson-Schulte

Join HPO Composer in Residence, Dr. Abigail Richardson-Schulte, to discuss classical music from 1900-1960.

This most dramatic shift in music history saw composers abandon centuries of tradition to fracture into different streams: impressionism, expressionism, modernism and more. Many composers embraced the folk music of their country, allowing nationalistic works to be exploited by savvy political leaders. These strong forces of change during an already turbulent time of World Wars and dictators caused not only fierce reactions from the public and critics but threats, imprisonment (and worse) from authorities.
