Job Posting: Collections Technician (YCW), Full time - Temporary

Duration: 12 weeks

This is a unique opportunity to join a small, curatorial and collections management team working to build and expand resources and opportunities for the local community. The museum is seeking an individual who has an interest research, exhibition design, collections management, documentation, and conservation in a local history museum. The candidate must be passionate about public access to collections and their management. This position will provide research, and collections management support to the museum’s summer and fall exhibitions as well as working on scheduled care of collection projects.

 

Details:

  • Complete vault shelf inventory and reorganization and update the database accordingly.
  • Create or update digital records in the Sumac Collections Management database, based on the existing accession documents and additional research.
  • Photograph artifacts, edit artifact photographs and attach the files to the appropriate records in the Sumac Collections Management database
  • Assist with the installation of the museum’s summer Exhibition “Tavern Town: Dundas on Tap” (Summer 2019).
  • Research topics, artifacts, themes, places, and people as defined by the interpretive plan for our upcoming fall exhibition “Wish you were here: Dundas through postcards”. Draft and edit exhibition text panels, and assist in the preparation and installation of artifacts for the exhibition.
  • Under the supervision of the Curator & General Manager, greet Museum visitors and respond to their inquiries as required.

Qualifications and skills:

A student who meets the Young Canada Works Summer Work Experience program criteria from a university or college program in museum studies, archival studies, library and information science, records management, history, public history or equivalent.

As well you should have the following skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Experience researching in and writing about Canadian history.
  • Experience working in a museum, archives or library environment.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Adobe Creative Cloud, Collections Databases).
  • Familiarity with scanning, photo editing, and data entry.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds comfortably.
